Conservatory student delivers instrument supplies to Cuba

Conservatory Cuba

Cuban-born Lynn University Conservatory of Music violinist Yalyen Savignon delivered instrument supplies to string students in Cuba during a recent visit to Havana. The items were donated by Triangle Strings, a university partner and one of the largest violin shops in North Carolina.

"Contributing toward music education in Cuba has always been one of my dreams," said Savignon. "Visiting the conservatories where I studied and giving back to young students who, like me at that age, are in need was a very special and gratifying experience."

Donations included gently used materials, such as strings, bridges, rosin, tailpieces, bows and bow hair that will help in the maintenance and repair of their instruments. Young string students will benefit from items donated to Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán, Taller de Lutería en la Habana Vieja and Conservatorio Guillermo Tomás Bouffartigue, and they shared their gratitude in thank you letters to Lynn and Triangle Strings.

One letter from Conservatorio Guillermo Tomás Bouffartigue expressed the impact these supplies will have on their students, stating that now they can take classes with instruments in optimal condition that will facilitate the learning of appropriate techniques.

"This is a true collaborative effort that helps make music part of children’s lives across the globe," said Manuel Capote, coordinator of music education and community outreach at Lynn. "The children were overcome with joy and gratitude since these items are impossible to get in Cuba and will make a difference in their musical development."
